I found this video: somewhat helpful, but it took some trying to get it to work on windows 8. Trying to install the 'FWupdate' as described in the video I got the notice that the DFU process couldn't be killed, but then I waited a minute and tried it again, and it worked. I don't know why, as I'm not a computer guru, but it seems persistence paid off, and everything appears to be working.
