My son uses a HP Compaq nx9420 also using the ATI Mobility Radeon X1600. The Windows 10 check actually returned that the PC could not be upgraded solely due to this graphics adapter (despite the adapter working fine in Windows 7 and meeting the stated minimum requirements).

I found this TechNet forum post which convinced me the upgrade could work: The question is about Windows 8, but the person providing the answer says the solution worked for his Windows 10 installation too. I downloaded the Windows 10 Upgrade ISO and followed the instructions given in that TechNet forum post.
